GLORIES OF KARTIK MONTH
31 st October to
30 th November , 2020
Gaurabda is the name of the Lunar calendar used by the Vaishnavas (worshippers of Lord Visnhu/ Lord Krishna). In this calendar, each month is named after Lord Krishna.
Among the twelve months of this Vaishnava calendar, certain months are very auspicious to perform devotionals services. Among such auspicious months, the most auspicious is the month of Kartika ,also known as Damodara Maas. It was during this month on the day of Diwali , that Krishna performed His Damodara lila. This month is also very dear to Srimati Radharani.
In the Puranas the following verses explains the glories of Kartik month.
na kartika samo maso na krtena samam yugam
na veda sadrsam na tirtha gangaya samam
kartikah pravaro maso vaisnavanam priyah sada
kartikam skalam yastu bhaktya sevate vaisnavah
There is no other month equal to Kartika and there is no other yuga equal to Krta-yuga. There is no other scripture equal to Vedas. There is no other place of pilgrimage equal to Ganges, therefore, the month of Kartika is very dear to the Vaishnavas.( Skanda Purana )
dvadasu api masesu kartikah krsna vallabah tasmin
sampujito visnur alpakair apy upayanaih dadati
vaisnavanam lokam iti evam niscitam maya
Among all twelve months, the month of Kartika is dear to Lord Sri Krishna. If somebody performs a little worship of Lord Sri Hari in this month, He offers that devotee His own abode. This statement is true. (Padma Purana)
The devotional services performed during Kartik are especially pleasing to the Lord and are rewarded with greater spiritual results than usual. The Padma Purana further recommends the daily offering of a ghee lamp to Lord Damodara (Krishna)Krishna during Kartik.
This month gets the name of Damodara because Lord Krishna performed the Damodar Lila in this month.. The Damodarashtakam prayers, composed by Satyavrata Muni, beautifully describe the Damodara lila, in which Yashoda binds mischievous Krishna to a grinding mortar. What we realize from the Damodarashtakam prayers is that the all-pervading, all-powerful Lord is easily conquered by the love of His devotee and that the love-saturated devotees desire nothing except to constantly hear and glorify His pastimes.
In ISKCON temples all over the world, devotees would offer ghee lamps to Lord Damodara while singing the Damodarastaka prayers. We are very happy to welcome you to join us in offering Ghee lamp to the Lord during Kartik month.
